Investment Philosophy & Strategy Overview

  • NZAM’s investment philosophy aims to produce absolute returns – positive returns each year regardless of market direction. Therefore the underlying funds that NZAM invests in are also managed with the same investment approach and philosophy.
  • Capital preservation is our primary objective, as we believe it is a key driver of investment success in the long term. From this platform we aim to produce sustainable and attractive annual returns.
  • NZAM invests in managers rather than markets. This emphasizes the importance of individual manager skills and how their strategy fits into the overall mix - regardless of where they may geographically invest. However, where appropriate, NZAM does make geographic allocation decisions based on region specific opportunities.
  • We heavily favour those managers who have invested a substantial portion of their own wealth in their fund alongside their investors as we believe that this aligns their interests with their investors’.
  • NZAM has a well structured, defined and disciplined multi-manager investment process designed to select and retain the best investment managers worldwide.
  • We believe that it is imperative that we develop strong relationships with our fund managers. These strong relationships allow us to have unparalleled access to the fund managers and their team, ensuring that we obtain detailed information on their strategy at any time. It also allows us to continue to accurately carry out ongoing due diligence on our selected managers once we have invested client’s capital with them. These strong relationships also tend to ensure that we can generally add capital to a fund even though it may be closed to other professional investors.
  • The investment approach is scalable. NZAM has ongoing access to existing managers together with the ability to add to selected new funds to cope with any significant increases in assets.
  • We have utilised our reputation and our long track record to enable us to gain access to many of the world’s top funds – funds that are often “closed” to other professional investors.
